Design Process

There are several steps involved in realising your final garden design. This is purposefully done to enable you to have ample opportunity for input at the various design stages. Each stage will be presented and explained to stimulate further discussion – in effect fine tuning the design as it progresses.

The Concept Plan
The initial consultation involves an on site meeting where I am able to assess the site, take all necessary measurements and have a full discussion about your needs and wants. Often this involves a site walk together where design issues are highlighted and I get to know more about your lifestyle.

Where required this information is formalised by completing a questionnaire together. During this discussion a broad range of topics are touched on which further increases my understanding of what you would like to achieve. A concept plan is then prepared based on this information.

This plan is drawn to scale and will show the main structural layout of the garden – paving, retaining walls, garden beds, gravel areas etc - and the main elements that are proposed such as water features. This plan should start to give you a feel for how the garden will look and is a good basis for further discussion and refinement. Material selection is considered and various options are canvassed for specification on the plan.

Examples:

The Planting Plan
Plant selection is only commenced when you are happy with the concept. Hence there is often an intermediate step where a revised concept plan is delivered and discussed. Plant selection is based on earlier discussions where favourite plants, garden styles and themes were covered. This plan will also be drawn to scale, plants will be labelled and a plant schedule will be generated.

This final plan will be suitable for construction and can be accurately quoted from if required. Alternatively you may construct the landscape yourself with the confidence of following a clear plan and knowing you will achieve your dream garden.

Additional Plans
Where requested detailed construction drawings can also be prepared. Maintenance schedules can also be provided for the plants selected in your garden.

Documentation
Plans are usually presented at a 1:100 scale to enable easy calculations. This means plans are printed in colour on A2 or A1 size paper as applicable – depending on site size. For larger sites it may be necessary to present several overlapping plans to cover the area. Three copies of the final plan are provided. Additional copies can be provided to give to landscapers to quote from if needed.
