A terrific example of what can be achieved when replacing the tired front lawn. Some existing plants were kept (e.g. the birch tree) while the additional planting is largely native. Mossy rocks help to break up the slope and a simulated creek bed – wide enough to be a pathway – meanders across the block. The crushed granite is a pleasant contrast to the woodchip mulch and mossy rocks. These rocks are used throughout the garden and also as rock islands in the creek which are softened with planting and river pebbles. What was once a struggling lawn area has been converted into a garden to complement the house – requiring minimal maintenance and surviving our hot summers with occasional watering from a rainwater tank.
